The Back to the Future trilogy is a comedic science fiction film trilogy written by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, directed by Zemeckis, and distributed by Universal Pictures. The plot follows the adventures of high-school student Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) as they use a modified DeLorean automobile to time travel to different periods in the history of Hill Valley, California.

The first film was the highest grossing film of 1985 and became an international phenomenon, leading to two sequels which were filmed back-to-back and released in 1989 and 1990 respectively. The trilogy is widely noted for its irreverent comedy, eccentric characters and ability to incorporate complex theories of time-travel without confusing the audience. Though the two sequels did not perform quite as well at the box office as the first film, the trilogy remains immensely popular and has yielded such spin-offs as an animated television series and a motion-simulation ride at the Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando, Florida (ride now closed as of late March 2007); Universal City, California (ride closed on September 3, 2007), and Osaka, Japan.

Back to the Future (1985)

In an episode of the American television show Supernatural "In The Beginning", Dean is taken travel back in time to the year 1973 by the Angel Castiel, causing Dean to question whether the angels "got their hands on some DeLoreans". In 1973, he encounters a younger version of his father, John Winchester, in a cafe much like Marty's encounter with George. Furthermore, someone also calls out "Hey, Winchester!" causing both to turn, echoing the "Hey, McFly!" moment. Finally, when Dean reveals that he is from the future, the demon Azazel calls him "Future Boy" referencing 1955 Doc's name for Marty.
In the video game Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, in the plans to the time machine, a "Flux Capacitor" can be seen.
- The Cooper Van, with Bentley's time machine attached, functions similarly to the DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future film series. As with the DeLorean, the van has to drive at a fast enough speed in order to time travel, although the van also needs an object from the same era the driver intends to travel to. The van also hovers during the time-traveling sequence, as the upgraded DeLorean does at the end of the first film.

A Simpsons episode titled "Bart to the Future" has an Indian sachem showing what Bart's future may look like 30 years from now. The bully Nelson Munt is a nightclub owner with a dark suit, turtleneck, and better styled hair than he had as a child. The future Nelson's appearance and business ownership was a nod to the powerful Biff of 1985A.
In the 1999 film Stuart Little, when Stuart is playing the guitar he does a duck walk similar to Marty McFly. Both Marty and Stuart were played by Michael J. Fox.
In the 2007 movie Knocked Up, Ben and Pete talk about Doc Brown, the DeLorean and Pete quotes the line "Where we're going, we don't need roads"
In the episode of Johnny Test "Old School Johnny", Johnny (who is voiced by James Arnold Taylor), with Dukey and his two sisters travel back in time to 1845 in the teahouse time machine, and discover they don't have a power source to return them home. After several attempts, at generating enough energy, fail (including lightning striking a clock tower in the first movie, and using a speeding locomotive in Back to the Future Part III), they are able to return home. Johnny then discovers, when he fails his history test in school, that they had changed their town's history.

After the people of Borovia takes fire from Professor Von Proton's Laboratory (which has the forcefield in the series), Professor Von Proton says "They found me. I don't know how but they found me." These are the same words spoken by Dr. Emmett Brown in Back to the Future, when bad guys arrive to start shooting at him.

When Ginger holding the Christmas lights on both hands, she let go the half of the Christmas lights and Mrs. Tweedy falls down on the air. then, Fowler pulls the levers down and the (crate) airplane flies into the sky. he says: "Bombs away!" and the Back to the Future theme song plays in the background. when Mrs. Tweedy enters the Pie Machine interior, stucked and the gravy rises up. then, Mr. Tweedy enters inside and steps back, closes the door in the Pie Machine room, with the Pie Machine blows up and the chocolate dripping in the front door, Mr. Tweedy opens the door again and reveals that Mrs. Tweedy is covered in gravy, just like Biff Tannen and his cronies with the manure. Mr. Tweedy says, "I told you they was organised."
In the cartoon episode of Danny Phantom, entitled "Double-Cross My Heart", a book store is depicted and the title of one book in the store is entitled "A Match Made in Space" and is written by George McFly, If Danny's voice sounds similar to that of Marty McFly from the animated series, it's because David Kaufman has done both roles.

The sound effect that is used for the DeLorean entering one time period from another (three bursts of energy), from the first experiment, at Twin Pines Mall, can be heard in multiple episodes, often when dealing with electrical attacks. The sound of the DeLorean revving its engine, shortly before it's revealed in the first film, can be heard in the episode "Arriving In Style". Some episodes also use the Star Wars sound effect for a lightsaber emitting the light blade.
In the anime episode, Kira Kira Happy ★ Hirake! Cocotama "Where Are We Going? Cocotama World", the Cocotamas modify their bus in the hopes of entering the Cocotama World. The modified bus contains design ques from the DeLorean Time Machine, most evident in the inclusion of the cooling fins. On their first arrived the bus disappears, leaves two trails of flaming tyre marks, much like the DeLorean does when it travels through time.
In "Peter", the 16th episode of the second season of the American television series Fringe, September meets with his associates, August and December, outside of a movie theater in an alternate dimension. The movie that is listed on the theater in this alternate dimension in 1985 is Back to the Future, Starring Eric Stoltz.^[1]
At the end of an episode of Total Drama Action "2008: A Space Owen", when Harold got eliminated and taken to the Lame-O-Sine. it then drove off and disappeared, leaving behind two trails of fire and the license plate, which spun around for a while before falling down.

Family Guy has made frequent references to the film:
- In the 2007 episode "Meet the Quagmires," Brian explains how the future changed a la Doc Brown. Brian takes over the dance band and plays "Earth Angel" while Peter proposes to Lois, and then when prompted, he says, "Here's a song by a gay guy," before starting to play "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. The injured bandleader, Rick's cousin "Marvin Astley" calls him up to listen to the song. The scene is a spoof on the performance of "Earth Angel" and "Johnny B. Goode" at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.
- In the 2008 episode "Baby Not On Board", Peter rides to school on his skateboard. This is basically a shot-by-shot remake of the scene from the first film, including the soundtrack The Power of Love.
- A flux capacitor is a key component part of Stewie Griffin's time machine in the 1999 episode, "Mind Over Murder". When Stewie builds a time machine. When someone finds his drawings, they recognize it by noting and says "A time machine. Sure. Here's where the flux capacitor goes".
- Stewie's newer model time machine's has the flux capacitor on here, his newer model's return pad runs on uranium in a cylinder similar to the plutonium from the first film in "Road to Germany". Also in this episode, while being chased by Nazis, Stewie breaks the vegetable's vendor cart to make a skateboard just as Marty McFly did in the first film; Parodying the almost identical scene in the first film, which uses the same music, when the Nazis' car catches up to Stewie's scooter, placing him in imminent jeopardy, Stewie lets the skateboard travel under the car while he runs over the top of the Nazis' heads to retrieve the skateboard at the back end, causing the Nazis to turn around to watch and then crash into the back of a truck filled with manure, which as a result of the impact dislodges and covers them. When Brian and Stewie arrived in the past, the motorcycle skid to a stop leaving twin trails of fire. the fire trails which meant to mimic the DeLorean time machine in Back to the Future; however, the pair of fire trails only appears when the DeLorean disappears into a new time period.
- in the 2005 episode "The Perfect Castaway", Peter Griffin builds a time machine out of a DeLorean and intends to travel to the past. He crashes into a wall right after starting the car and gets out. When the people run out of the mall in flames, and says: "Wow. everyone in 1955 on fire! I never knew that."
- in the 2000 episode "If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin", Peter Griffin remembers his cousin Rufus, who starred in a series of blaxploitation films including "Black to the Future" (said to be "from the people who brought you Caddyblack, Blackdraft, and Black Kramer vs. Kramer"). The DeLorean time machine, meeting up with his teenager mother, and performing at the school dance are spoofed in the scene.

In The Suite Life on Deck episode "International Dateline", the S.S. Tipton is repeatedly struck by lightning while crossing the International Dateline and sent a few hours back in time, creating a temporal loop. Lightning induced time travel is a major plot point in Back to the Future that mimicking the DeLorean and the clocktower.
In the cult film Donnie Darko, a film that uses time travel as a key theme, there is a scene between Donnie and his science teacher when they are discussing the possibility of time travel, and Donnie cheekily refers to the DeLorean.
In the 30-minute short film "Passion to the Max", The DeLorean time machine appeared in this film. In addition, the DeLorean speeds fast at 88 mph and travels through time, leaving a pair of fire trails behind and the license plate, which spun around for a while before falling down.
In the Drake & Josh TV special, Merry Christmas Drake & Josh, At a parade, Crazy Steve pulls up to Drake and Josh's float in a DeLorean DMC-12. Then, the camera makes a close-up examination on the front of the DeLorean similar to the one seen in Back to the Future. When Steve gets back into the car, he immediately drives away. When the car drives away, the license plate falls off, spins and then drops flat onto the ground.
In the 2006 Disney-Pixar movie "Cars", Lightning McQueen calls, "Doc, doc wait!" as Doc Hudson heads back to Radiator Springs after racing around the desert, similar to how Marty yells to Doc at the Twin Pines Mall when they are being attacked by the Libyans.
In the Wizards of Waverly Place episode "Franken-Girl", Justin uses the electrical current of "one-point-twenty one-gigawatts" from his wand to bring Franken-Girl to life.

When Protagonist riding in the Buick Grand National across Los Angeles. the car has the same time-travel capabilities as the DeLorean time machine, it shows the bumper sticker in the back has the Back to the Future logo. the wiring around the car are on the outside, the gauge meters in the cockpit resemble the ones (including the alarm clock), the "Midnight Club"-shaped rocket engines appear in the back of the vehicle that in the same postion as the Rear Venting System, a device in the cabin called the "flux capacitor", time circuits, and the digital 88 speedometer are featured. when Protagonist pulls down the six speed stick and floors the gas, the vehicle drove off in the speed of light, the rocket cloud smoke bursts out, the car going fast at the highest top speed, the coils would glow in a fluorescent flash of blue light, internal circuits glowed, and the flux capacitor fired rapidly. the special ability EMP comes out with electric shocks in the front of the vehicle, the car seemed to explode and vanishing into thin air, leaves a pair of fiery tire tracks behind and the license plate spins around and falls to the ground.

In the 2003 movie Kopps, the last scene, when those two guys get into a police car (a Volvo V70) that has been modified into the DeLorean Pizza car. they back up, the wheels fold into a hover conversion, and it flies away, swings back and goes right toward the camera.
In the 2007 Animated Disney Movie "Meet the Robinsons", car based time machine affecting present by permitting to alter events in the past, and picture of flying delorian seen in Lewis' notebook when he has his adoption interview.
In the 2015 animated film; Home, the characters Tip and Oh have a slushy-powered, apparently sentient car named the Slushious. When the Slushious blasts away from the gas station, the license plate spins around and falls to the ground, similar to Back to the Future.

In Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time, the washing machine-like time machine has several functions that are like the DeLorean, including the flux capacitor, time circuits, and the speedometer.

In Transformers: Rescue Bots, a solar powered DeLorean is seen in the episodes “Hotshots”, “The Other Doctor”, “Time After Time”, and “Hot Rod Bot”. Invented by Dr. Greene, this version of the DeLorean features green fluid tubes around the car’s body resembling the wiring on the outside, a round core connected to these tubes is in the same position as the flux capacitor, the gauge meters in the cockpit resemble the ones (including the alarm clock) seen on the inside of the DeLorean time machine.
The car was later end up flattened by the MorBot in the episode “The Other Doctor”, but the flux-capacitor can be seen in this episode.
However, in the episode “Time After Time” Dr. Greene has either rebuilt the vehicle, or built a new one. He used it to drive to a clock tower dedication.
In the episode "Hot Rod Bot", the car was involved in a test using a remote controlled device meant to speed up cars, similar to how Doc Brown controlled the DeLorean in the first film.
In the 2002 animated TV Movie Inspector Gadget's Last Case: Claw's Revenge, One of the cars in the junkyard boast of being a time machine.
In the 1995 Disney-Pixar's first computer animated movie "Toy Story", Rex quotes George McFly, by saying "I just don't think I could take that kind of rejection!" and "I don't like confrontations!".

In the 1997 short "Five Men and a Limo", The Limousine drove fast on the road and the music in the background that resembling the Back to the Future theme.

- In the 2007 Doctor Who episode "Blink", minutes after the disappearance of character Cathy Nightingale, her grandson delivers a letter to Sally Sparrow, a letter entrusted to him 20 years previously, explaining Cathy's disappearance to the year 1920 and her subsequent life, despite having only left Sally moments earlier. This references the scene in Back to the Future Part II, when Marty receives a letter written in 1885 just moments after Doc's departure (see Plot Synopsis) and the lines of the respective characters are almost identical in places.
- In the episode "Gridlock", the flying vans appear is almost entirely similar to the flying DeLorean in Part II, including digital clocks in the cockpits that resemble the time circuits.

In the Family Guy episode "Meet the Quagmires," Peter goes back in time and ends up not marrying Lois, altering history much like in Back to the Future Part II. In the altered timeline, Brian draws a time-line similar to Doc Brown's (while the track "Alternate 1985" from the film score plays in the background) and adds, among the things different, "for some reason, we now have a chalkboard in the living room." Peter also has a photograph of his children which fades throughout the episode, similar to Marty's.
At the end of the Family Guy special "Something, Something, Something, Darkside," Chris receives a letter from a mysterious man. The letter is a duplicate of the one at the end of Part II, and the last lines of the special are "1885?!, the Doc's alive, I mean he's in the old west, but he's alive!!", mirroring the end of Part II. The man is voiced by Joe Flaherty, who played the Western Union man who delivered the letter in BTTF II.
In the episode "The Big Bang Theory", Stewie's letter delivered by The Vatican at a specific time to assure Brian he's alive and where to find him, in the DeLorean time machine. Joe Flaherty from this movie delivers the letter.
In the episode "Petey IV", After Vladimir Putin calls Peter "chicken", Peter responds "nobody calls me chicken" and challenges him to a fight, just as Marty McFly does in the "Back to the Future" sequels.
In the episode "Don't Be a Dickens at Christmas", Patrick Swayze's ghost escorts Peter through an alternate reality where Peter is dead. Peter then sees his own grave at the cemetery, parodying the scene where Marty McFly returns to alternate 1985 and sees his father's (George McFly) grave.
In the episode "The Courtship of Stewie's Father", Stewie imagines Doc Brown in the DeLorean telling Marty and Jennifer "something's gotta be done about your kids." The plot of Cinderella III: A Twist in Time centered around the antagonist, Lady Tremaine, finding out about Cinderella's Fairy Godmother and stealing the magic wand so that she can change the timeline to her own gain, similar to what Biff does in Back to the Future Part II. In an article about Disney sequels written for the Progressive Boink website, staff member Mike Fireball noted the similarity by jokingly referring to the film as "Alternate 1985 Cinderella".
In the 2003 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Sewer Slider build by the turtles has an identical shape and the same flying capabilities as the DeLorean.
