Interestingly, Randall's camouflage ability varies in different ways throughout the film. For example, sometimes he'll disappear with his face still visible, become completely invisible (face included,) or change color when he touches something. He also has a long prehensile tail that he uses for things as complicated as hanging on things or as simple as closing doors. Also, Randall can cling to vertical surfaces and ceiling, thus adding the characteristics of a gecko to his various animal components.

Role in Plot [Spoiler warningSpoiler warning]: Plot and/or ending details follow. In the movie Monsters Inc., Randall Boggs works as a Scarer for the power company Monsters Inc., gathering energy by entering children's rooms via a system of closet doors and making them scream. He acts as the direct rival of the movie's protagonists, James P. Sullivan, and Mike Wazowski, and is in competition with them for the post of Top Scarer. However, Randall has also constructed a "Scream Extractor," and attempts to kidnap a human child in cooperation with the company's leader, Henry J. Waternoose, with the hopes to eventually rise to the leader of the company. He is defeated after a chase through the factory and is banished into a trailer, where a hill billy matriarch hits him in the head multiple times with a shovel.

When all the Scarer's names are shown on screen on the scare floor, all of the names are last names, with the exception of Randall's.

Randall is seen along side the most cameos from other Pixar films then any other character in the movie (with the possible exception of Sulley.) These cameos include the wallpaper from Andy's room from Toy Story, the interior of Sid's room seen through the door that Sulley throws Randall through (along with the clown fish plaque from the then upcoming film of Finding Nemo,) and the trailer from A Bug's Life along side the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story.
